Hey, welcome to wellness Smith. So today it's just me, Vanessa. Emily is in Hawaii right now. So she is too busy enjoying her vacation and isn't joining us today. So I'm sorry. It's just me. I actually tried really hard to recruit my husband, Craig, to record with me today. He initially yes. I said yes, but then backed out, got a little nervous because we're talking about chlorophyll water today and he claims he doesn't know anything about chlorophyll water. Okay. I guess that's valid. Craig, I'll let you off the hook here. Maybe in the future. We need to try to, I don't know, have like a listener, be a guest cohost if Emily or I are away, that could be kind of fun, but anyway, let's get into it. So today we want to talk about the very, very trendy chlorophyll water. So we've been seeing this. Everywhere. And it has been blowing up on Tik TOK and social media. And I have to actually give a little shout out to Trudy P for suggesting we do this episode. This one is for you trued. She texted me not too long ago and said, Oh my gosh, chlorophyll water is targeting me. Do I need this? And you probably know what we're going to say in regards to, if you need any supplements. But we're going to dig into the science on it. So before we get into it, I actually have to disclose something. So I actually consumed liquid chlorophyll way before with school. This is actually really embarrassing, but I'm going to share it with you guys anyway, because I have no shame. So when I was young, I had a bit of a BEO problem, like in young adolescents. And my mom noticed this, that I was a little bit stinky, so naturally. And for those of you who know my mom, this. Would make total sense instead of, you know, maybe having me wear some extra deodorant, she had me start drinking liquid chlorophyll. I love you mom. And okay. This is not, I know it sounds crazy right now. This is actually not completely unfounded. Chlorophyll does actually have detoxifying properties and it did actually work. Am I saying that. You should take liquid chlorophyll. If you have a little bit of EO. No, it's okay to stink a little bit. I know that sounds crazy because we don't want to be smelling bad. I mean, take a shower, wear deodorant. Do she got to do, but like you don't have to smell like a beautiful Rose at all times. So let's get into the background of chlorophyll. So we're going to rewind all the way back to biology class. Most of you are probably already familiar with what chlorophyll is, but just in case you're sleeping during class we'll review really quickly. So chlorophyll is the pigment implants that gives them their bright green color. So core fill helps plants convert sunlight to nutrients. So pretty amazing stuff. Right? Chlorophyll absolutely has wonderful benefits for us too. It's. Packed with antioxidants anti-cancer has anti-inflammatory properties. It can benefit healthy gut function and support your body's natural detox pathways. Hence why my mom was giving it to me when I was a child, because I was a little stinky studies have shown that chlorophyll can aid in protection against environmental toxins by binding to those carcinogenic toxins and inhibiting GI absorption. And. So, like I said, my mom was not crazy. Chlorophyll has been shown to have internal deodorizing effects. They actually use chlorophyll and efforts to decrease odor related to. Ostomies also known as poop bags, sorry. Hey, RD friends out there. Remember telling all those people with Astrophe bags that they needed to eat less odorous foods, so no onions or garlic. Maybe we should have been giving them some chlorophyll. so at this point, you're probably thinking, Oh my gosh, chlorophyll seems great. I should be eating it all the time. Well, you might be eating it all the time already, or you should be. But let's dig in a little bit deeper to chlorophyll water. So there's this newer product on the market called chlorophyll water. It actually has a synthetic form of chlorophyll called chlorophyll fill-in. So this version of chlorophyll, they combined sodium and copper with the chlorophyll to make it more absorbable in the body. Or that's what they're saying, at least. So they're claiming by replacing magnesium in naturally occurring chlorophyll or replacing magnesium with copper and natural occurring chlorophyll, it makes chlorophyll in water soluble and our bodies can absorb it better. So what are people on Tik taxane? people on take TAC are promoting chlorophyll, water, like crazy, because they're saying it's reducing bloating, it's clearing up acne, it's eating and weight loss. And I actually looked into it a little bit. So a case of six, 12 ounce bottles, bottles of chlorophyll water is $30. That's pretty pricey. Is it worth that super steep price. Like I said, these companies are selling chlorophyll water, trying to make you believe that chlorophyll in is better absorbed the natural chlorophyll. But my research has not actually shown that. the Research I found in bio availability. Yeah. Natural chlorophyll is actually quite good. So actually one of the studies that I found it was actually done in rats, but the chlorophyll in, so that's the synthetic foreign form actually did not have the same protective benefits as the chlorophyll in preventing colon cancer. Most of the studies showing benefits to the skin are actually topical chlorophyll. and there's a very, very limited. Info on weight loss, but that claim is probably mostly due to anecdotal experiences how can you normally get chlorophyll you don't need fancy chlorophyll water. Listen, if you. Are dying to try it. Go ahead. It's probably not going to hurt you in any way. I mean, maybe the biggest side effect you could get would be like diarrhea or some GI upset, but there's not a big risk to trying it other than it's pretty expensive. So if you're wanting to get chlorophyll, you want to look to your green vegetables. Those are going to be the things that you want to eat to get chlorophyll naturally. Like I said, there's a ton of benefits. A really good old fashioned way is a good old fashioned wheat grass shot, but you don't even have to be that fancy. Okay. So you can get chlorophyll and spinach parsley, green beans, Rugola leaks, sugar, peas, cabbage. All of those things are going to have a good amount of chlorophyll in them. And those are things that you should be eating already. So if you're getting a good amount of greens every day, I don't see a reason that you need to be drinking chlorophyll water. Now, if you're having specific issues, maybe like issues with detox pathways, or maybe you have an ostomy or something like that, hopefully you don't have an ask to me, but if you do. For things like that, maybe it's a good idea to not necessarily chlorophyll water, but to supplement some actual. Extra chlorophyll in those cases. But I think it's important to remember, and we always kind of say this with every supplement. You don't want to be supplementing just to supplement. Okay. So if we're supplementing, we want it to be targeting a specific issue. you're having a specific issue and we need some extra supplements to really get at that, that's where. They're most, useful to take a supplement just to take it. It's kind of a waste of your money because , if you're already eating a bunch of green vegetables, why do you need this extra chlorophyll water? I don't think you need to spend $30 on six bottles of chlorophyll water. If you are someone who doesn't like green vegetables, or you have a hard time intaking them and you're thinking, okay, I want these benefits. You know, that core Phil has shown and you don't mind spending the extra money then. Great, go ahead. Have at it, it's not going to be a bad thing or it's unlikely to have bad side effects, but again, probably something that you don't need. So like always be careful of ticktack trends and trends in general. Just stick with food when you can. We'd love to say food first. Okay. Food is absolutely going to come. First supplements are going to come after that. You cannot supplement your way out of the bad diet. So. Eat your greens, blend your greens. Saute your greens have salads, whatever way you like eating greens. Try to eat those first. If you need extra chlorophyll due to a specific problem, then you can supplement. That's all I got for you today. A quick and dirty look at chlorophyll water. We will talk to you soon. Have a wonderful day.
